Restaurants & Cafes

(Engyu Cafe)

Type: Yakiniku (self-cooked with earthen charcoal braziers)
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/engu0808/
Hours: Monday through Saturday from Noon to 4 PM, Tuesday through Thursday 6 PM to 4 AM, and Friday through Sunday 6 PM through 6 AM.

Contrary to the name, this is a standard Yakiniku shop rather than a cafe. It has  excellent strong drinks, good food at reasonable prices, a friendly staff, and hours that accommodate both lunches and late evenings. They have an “English” Menu available, but it is adorably incorrect to the point that it may be difficult if not impossible to decipher. It is recommended that you have someone with a basic grasp of written Japanese (hiragana and katakana, some basic kanji) for ordering from the standard menu. About a ten minute walk from Koga Station.

(Kamatatsu)

Hours: Wednesday through Monday 11 AM through 2 PM and 5 PM to 9 PM (Closed Tuesdays)
Delicious food with a wonderful atmosphere and tatami seating, but fairly expensive!! Recommended only for a special occasion as even the cheapest meal will probably run you at least ¥3,500 per person. About a ten minute walk from Koga Station, menu is in Japanese without photographs.

(Café Don)

Type: Simple Café food and drinks
Website: http://teastyle.jp/ryouin/shop/don/
Address:
Hours: Daily from 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM (20:00) (Closed the first and third Wednesday of every month)
About a two minute walk from the train station and located right next to the tracks, this is a charming little cafe that is also easy to find. The food is fairly standard, but the owner is kind and the prices are reasonable, and the atmosphere is unique and relaxing. There’s a strange sort of antique feeling about the cafe from the moment you step in the door. The menu is also in both English and Japanese.

(ORIENt Hall)

Type: Various western and foreign food from around the world
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/orient0883/

Geared to the lunch crowd, their food is excellent and incredibly inexpensive for its quality and quantity. They also hold special events where you can get lunch and have your nails done at the same time. Highly recommended overall. About a five minute walk from Koga Station, just across the train tracks near Kato Cycle.
