Chikugo Noodle-Making Village, part of a local factory, offers visitors the chance to make their own soba. You can also taste different kinds of noodles from udon to ramen and browse local handicrafts. The noodle experience costs ¥2625 per person and takes about an hour.

Enj no Yu  Located at the foothills of Ukiha, this hot stone treatment is a combination of a sauna and steam bath. For ¥500 an hour, you can recline for 15 minutes, break briefly, then return. Bring your own pajamas and small and large towels, or rent it all with a drink for ¥1000. Recommended for its health benefits, the bath is comfortable even for those wary of traditional saunas.

By bus, get off at the Naka-machi stop and head to Enjji (Route 151). There, turn left and it is on your left-hand side. Water World Ukiha no Yu  Here you can enjoy baths with four different temperatures as well as an herbal dip, sauna, and salt-scrub room complete with TV. There is also an outside bath featuring a waterfall—the women’s side even has a waterslide! Admission is ¥520 and an extra ¥250 if you need to borrow a towel and toiletries.

Mori no Ie Ongakukan is a small and funky café located in the hills of Ukiha. It often features live music, enhanced by a back wall resembling two huge gramophones. One of the few places in the area that uses organic produce, Ongakukan is happy to accommodate vegetarian requests.

Tony’s Café is one of the most authentic Mexican restaurants in the prefecture. José and his wife Sachiyo serve up all your favorite Mexican dishes as well as imported beers and wines. The menu is constantly changing and José can alter the spiciness. It is also available for parties, but call ahead with more than five people. They both speak English so there will be no language problems.

Vega is a small Southwestern American-themed café that serves Japanese curry. The staff are happy to have foreigners visit and will try to speak English.

Grass soccer fields along the banks of the Chikugo River can be rented for a nominal fee.

Powerhouse Gym, behind Vega, is a small gym with lots of weights and some cardio machines with televisions. You can pay ¥1000 for one visit or join for around ¥3000 a month if you buy a membership. On your first visit, one of the staff members will set you up with a training program. The gym includes showering facilities.

Other

Glare is a hair salon, game center, and general hangout run by Takanori, the brother-in-law of José from Tony’s Café. This is a great place to get a haircut while watching Japanese MTV. Takanori speaks a bit of English and displays photographs from his world travels throughout the store; he and his friends love to swap travel tips and stories with foreigners. Haircuts from around ¥4000, cut and color ¥8000. It’s a good idea to call ahead for an appointment as Takanori sometimes closes the shop to travel overseas.
