Udo Shrine

The Udo Shrine is located to the south of Miyazaki City, on the breathtaking Nichinan Coast. The shrine dedicated to Yamasachihiko, the father of Japan’s mythical first emperor, Emperor Jimmu. Visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view from the shrine located on the side of a cliff towering above the ocean.

When visiting the Udo Shrine be sure to look out for the breast-shaped rocks which are said to have nurture Japan’s first emperor. The water dripping from these rocks are also said to be beneficial for just about everything related to pregnancy and childbirth, while the shrine is considered to be lucky for couples and newlyweds.

As fortune would have it, the good luck doesn’t stop with expecting mothers, couples and the like. There’s a bit of luck for everyone, for a small fee you can buy undama (good luck balls) at the shrine, which you toss at a target, hitting the target, ensures good luck.

How to Get There

From the third floor of the Hakata Bus Terminal take a Phoenix or Super Phoenix highway bus to Miyazaki-eki Mae. It takes about 4 hours and 11 minutes to get there and costs 4,500 Yen. When you arrive at Miyazaki-eki Mae enter the station and ask for the bus to Udo Jingu Iriguchi.

Takachiho Gorge

Takachiho Gorge is located in Takachiho town in the north of Miyazaki prefecture, on the border with Kumamoto and Oita prefectures. The Gokasegawa River flows through the gorge, which is a picture of beauty with steep cliffs elevating into the sky and cascading waterfalls. The most popular spot along the gorge is Manai-no-taki Falls, standing at 17 meters high with a magnificent cloud of spray from the descending water. There is a 600 meter long walking trail along the gorge flanked by mountain cherries, Japanese azaleas and Wisteria.

Boat Ride

Boat tours begin at 8:30 a.m. and continue until 5:00 p.m. During the summer vacation tours take place from 7:30 a.m. to 18:00 p.m. Boat tours start at a period of half an hour and attract a charge for every ten additional minutes. The seating capacity is three persons per boat.

How to Get There

Buses run from the Hakata Bus Terminal (the third floor) and also Nishitetsu Tenjin Bus Center directly to Takachiho Bus Centre. It takes around 3 hours and 15 minutes to get there and costs ¥3910.

Nichinan Coast

Visitors can view the beautiful tropical stretch which is the Nichinan Coast by way of a coastal road. It offers a serene and relaxed atmosphere to enjoy nature’s splendor. Plus attractions such as Udo Shrine and Aoshima Island are located in this area.

Special Foods

Obi Tempura

Commonly called Obiten, Obi Tempura is a specialty Obi Castle Town in Nichinan City. It is with deep-fried mashed fish mixed with soybean paste, brown sugar and tofu.

Chicken Nanban

This dish originated in Miyazaki and has become a signature dish of the prefecture. The dish contains deep-fried chicken, covered in vinegar and tartare sauce dressing.

Jidori-momoyaki

This dish only uses all-natural chickens raised in Miyazaki. It consists of salted chicken grilled over a charcoal fire.
