Clothing: Sizing and Tailoring

SIZING

CLOTHING

Japanese manufacturers produce goods on a sizing system unique to this country.  Clothing tends to run small to account for the petite sized Japanese consumer.  Therefore, in many of the stores that are technically imports (e.g. Gap, Zara) you may find that you need to go a size up to accommodate for these sizing differences.   Also, plus sized/big and tall options are generally unavailable or available only at limited specialty stores.  Below is a sizing chart to help you get started.  Keep in mind though, this chart is just an approximation and it is always best to try something on in store.

SHOES

Shoes tend towards the small side as well and oftentimes, stores don’t stock above an American women’s size 7 or men’s size 10.   Large footed folks tend to have better luck at stores that stock international brands (e.g. ABC Mart or Zara) but your best bet is to bring extra shoes from home or consider ordering from an online retailer as options truly are limited.

LINGERIE

Like everything else clothing related brasserie is also produced for the less endowed.  If you happen to be a busty bell, bring extra bras from home.  Bra sizing is not only limited, Japanese aesthetic tends towards the frilly and padded side so if you happen to enjoy that sort of thing, there are many lingerie shops located in most shopping centers throughout the prefecture.  If you’re a “perfect t-shirt bra” kind of gal, you’ll have a hard time finding anything that suits your tastes. Here’s a link to a handy bra size converter.

TAILORING

For those of you who may be “irregularly” sized or simply need/prefer a custom fit, tailoring services are available in most retailers and dry cleaning locations.  The most common (and cheapest) alteration done is pant shortening but many places will also custom fit shirts, jackets, re-sew buttons etc.

RECOMMENDED TAILORS

Azabu Tailors

The head sign of this men’s only custom suit shop is written in all lower case.  There are two locations in Fukuoka city and both offer quality service for reasonable prices.  A made to order suit starts from 36750 yen and made to order shirts start from 6930 yen. Prices vary depending on the materials you choose which are displayed inside sample books in the store, as are the many options for collars, cuffs and buttons.  Order completion takes about 2 – 3 weeks.

NOTE: If you have zero Japanese it will help to go with someone who can assist you, but if you have enough Japanese to understand roughly what is being said you will be fine.  Even then, if you are without a Japanese savvy friend and are completely Japanese illiterate, fear not.  The folks at Azabu are professionals and taking measurements is their daily bread.  There really isn’t much that can go wrong.
