“Cycling for Charity” Event
The Fukuoka AJET Charity Committee is a group made up entirely of JETs living in Fukuoka prefecture. The Charity Committee plans and organizes fundraising events that invite all members of the community to participate in an attend. Money raised from these events is donated to local and international charities.
In addition to fundraising, the Charity Committee organizes local volunteer events for Fukuoka JETs to participate in. This is just another way of getting JETs involved in their local community, in connection with the JET Programme’s mission of international exchange.
Here are some events that the Charity Committee is involved with:
- Food for the Homeless – in collaboration with the AGAPE House in Fukuoka, volunteers spend a Saturday preparing 100+ meals that will be handed out to Fukuoka’s homeless population. Food distribution takes place in a park near Hakata station. In the past, the Charity Committee has helped supply volunteers for this as well as provide funding to buy food.
- Cycling for Charity – this springtime event that takes place as the cherry blossoms are in bloom. Participants of this event ride in groups throughout Kokura admiring the abundant sakura trees and participating in a stamp relay. The bike ride ends with at Kokura castle where everyone eats lunch and enjoys hanami. Participants’ entry fees are donated to charity.
- Songs of Summer – our biggest and longest-running event, this concert takes place in Tenjin in Fukuoka. All types of music is performed by performers, both from the JET community and the local community. Money raised from ticket sales is donated to charity.
In addition to these three annual events, the Charity Committee hosts smaller fundraising and volunteering events as opportunities arise.
